Designing for Inclusivity

Recording available for enrolled HCDE 521 students via course canvas page.

Bekah Marcum is the Design Lead for Product Equity at Meta, where she co-leads the Equity Co-Design Lab that works with products across the company, including: Instagram, Meta GenAI products, and Oculus.

Bekah’s career has taken some unexpected turns—with degrees in Film, Cultural Anthropology, and Communications - her path has wound through film, motion design, visual design, art direction, advertising, industrial design, and community organizing. Each step adding a new layer to her understanding of how design can shape people’s experiences and lives.

In her talk, Designing for Inclusivity, Bekah will reflect on how her unconventional path led her to focus on advocating for equitable and inclusive design. She’ll offer practical tips and honest reflections on what it means to design for everyone—not just the easiest audiences to reach.

The UX Speaker Series is hosted Thursdays in Winter Quarter by the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington. Presentations are open to the public.

Depending on the speaker's preference, a recording will be posted to this webpage after the event. View the full schedule at hcde.uw.edu/ux.
