SECURE: Safeguarding the Entire Community of the U.S. Research Ecosystem
"Research security" is a new and mounting field of international science policy, research, and technology development. The department of HCDE and our CoSSaR center have been "tapped" by the US National Science Foundation to co-create a new center called SECURE, with the goal of coordinating and supporting the rollout of research security in the US, and in partnership with international collaborators. This talk will summarize the co-design model for SECURE, and recount some of the oncoming research and political challenges for doing so. With many design challenges, including the national co-creation of a shared virtual environment for enhanced research security, there will be many opportunities for HCDE students and researchers to bring their expertise to bear in the coming months and years.
Dr. Mark Haselkorn is a professor in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering, specializing in the design and development of complex systems for multi-stakeholder collaboration. He directs the Center for Collaborative Systems for Security, Safety, and Regional Resilience (CoSSaR) a multi-disciplinary research and development environment where professionals from a wide range of entities (Federal, State, County, City, Tribal, International, Public and Private) team with university experts to align strategies, processes and investments in systems for security, safety and resilience.
Dr. David Ribes is a professor in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering. He is a sociologist of science and technology who focuses on the development and sustainability of research infrastructures (i.e., networked information technologies for the support of interdisciplinary science); their relation to long-term changes in the conduct of science; and, epistemic transformations in objects of research.
The HCDE Research Speaker Series is hosted Thursdays in Autumn Quarter by the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering at the University of Washington. Presentations are open to the public.
