The process of applying to the Bachelor of Science in Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) depends on a student's entry point to the University of Washington. Choose an option below to learn more about the different pathways for entering the major.
Students admitted through Direct to College
High School Students – Direct to College Admission
For current high school students who are planning to apply to UW: If you were admitted to the UW as a freshman and selected engineering-undeclared or an engineering major (other than computer engineering) as your first-choice major on your application, you will automatically be considered for Direct to College (DTC) admission. If admitted DTC, you will enter the UW as an Engineering Undeclared (ENGRUD) student and will have the opportunity to explore many engineering disciplines before requesting placement in an engineering major after your freshman year. Admission to DTC is only available in autumn quarter. For more information on the application process and deadlines, visit the College of Engineering’s Freshman admission website.
Current UW Engineering Undeclared (ENGRUD) students
Welcome to the University of Washington College of Engineering! As an Engineering Undeclared student, your first year will include engineering foundational coursework such as math and science, as well as UW general education courses. At the end of your freshman year and by the July 1 deadline, you will request placement into an engineering major. The requirements to request placement are as follows:
- Maintain a minimum 2.00 cumulative GPA in courses used to satisfy placement requirements.
- Complete placement requirements with grades of 2.0 or above in each course.
If you meet the placement requirements and list at least five majors in your placement request, you are guaranteed to be placed into one of the engineering majors. However, you may or may not be placed into your first choice major. Some majors may receive more placement requests than they can accommodate. Learn more about the placement process.
UW interest-changers: capacity-constrained admission pathway
This is the only admission point to the HCDE BS program for current UW students other than through the Direct to College pathway. You must complete all application requirements below no later than the April 5 application deadline. If you have already completed the application requirements below, you can use our HCDE BS degree requirements as additional course guidance.
Interest changers preparing to apply to HCDE can preview the application components that they will be required to submit and the personal statement prompt by following the “Get Ready to Apply” link on the engineering admissions application website. Refer to Current UW Non-Engineering Student Admissions for additional details.

- Prerequisite course requirements: Must be completed by the department application deadline.
10 credits from: MATH 120, MATH 124 (or QSCI 291), MATH 125 (or QSCI 292), MATH 126 |
One course from: CSE 121, CSE 122, CSE 123, CSE 142, CSE 160 |
One course from: STAT 220, STAT 221, STAT 290, STAT 311, STAT 390, QMETH 201, Q SCI 381, EDPSY 490, IND E 315 |
Three courses from: CHEM 142, CHEM 152, CHEM 162, PHYS 114/121*, PHYS 115/122*, PHYS 116/123*, NURS 301/B STR 301, BIOL 118, BIOL 180, BIOL 200, BIOL 220, PSYCH 202 |
5 credits English Composition |
*The UW does not grant credit for both courses, so only one course would count, e.g., a student who has taken both PHYS 114 and PHYS 121 would only have earned five (5) credits towards this prerequisite requirement.
Note: The 3 science courses above do not have to all be taken from the same series, as long as at least 3 courses from the list have been completed. UW’s Honors/accelerated calculus, chemistry, and physics series may also apply to the requirements above. Refer to the course descriptions for overlap restrictions between the Honors/accelerated and non-Honors series.
Important: The HCDE Department is preparing to make changes to our curriculum in order to seek ABET accreditation. As part of these changes, we anticipate that we will be removing precalculus (MATH 120), the algebra-based physics series (PHYS 114-116), and biopsychology (PSYCH 202) from our admission prerequisite list in the future. Students who will be applying to begin the HCDE major in Autumn 2026 or later should anticipate that MATH 120, PHYS 114-116, and PSYCH 202 will no longer be accepted as HCDE admission prerequisites and should plan to select other courses from the list above to complete the HCDE admission prerequisites. Students applying to HCDE for Autumn 2024 or Autumn 2025 may still use these courses to meet admission prerequisites; however, if they have not yet taken these courses, we would encourage them to select other courses from the HCDE admission prerequisite list. For more information, see the HCDE Undergraduate Curriculum Changes FAQs.
Transfer Students
If you started your studies at another college or university and are looking to transfer to UW HCDE, you must complete all application requirements below no later than the April 5 application deadline. If you have already completed the application requirements below, you can use our HCDE BS degree requirements as additional course guidance.
Transfer students preparing to apply to HCDE can preview the application components that they will be required to submit and the personal statement prompt by following the “Get Ready to Apply” link on the engineering admissions application website. Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs for All Prospective HCDE BS Students
What is the application deadline for admission into the department?
For UW interest changers and transfer students, the application deadline is April 5 for autumn quarter start. Prior to applying to the HCDE major, transfer applicants must also submit a UW application by the UW transfer application deadline.
For current high school students applying for Direct to College admission, find more information and deadlines on the College of Engineering’s Freshman admission website.
For current UW engineering undeclared (ENGRUD) students requesting placement into a major, see the College of Engineering’s placement website.
Can I apply to multiple College of Engineering departments with one application?
Yes, all departments use the same online application. All students applying to more than one major will be asked to rank their major preferences. Transfers/interest changers applying to more than one major will need to complete the application requirements and write personal statements for each engineering major that they wish to apply to.
Will I have an advantage if I submit my application before the deadline?
No, all applications are reviewed together after the application deadline so submitting early will not result in an earlier decision.
What is the difference between HCDE and similar UW majors like Informatics, Computer Science, and Interaction Design?
HCDE has three major areas of learning: technicality, design, and social scientific. Technicality refers to building the systems that have been designed, including front and back end coding. The UW Computer Science and Informatics programs have a greater focus on technicality than HCDE does, and Interaction Design has fewer technical components than HCDE. The design component includes visual, product, interaction, service, and other forms of design across industries. The Interaction Design major has the greatest emphasis on design, followed by HCDE then Informatics. Computer Science has the least emphasis on design. Social scientific describes the integration of psychology, sociology, ethics, and other fields related to people and their interactions. HCDE has the greatest emphasis on social scientific content, followed by Informatics. CSE and Interaction Design both have minimal focus on the social scientific.
How long does the program take to complete?
The undergraduate program is designed for students to start the 300-level core courses in their second-to-last year, completing them before the capstone series. Students must be enrolled at UW during winter and spring of their final year to complete the 2-course capstone series, offered once per year. DTC (including STARS) students should plan to complete the major in three academic years. All other students typically begin the major as juniors so should plan to complete the major in two academic years. Prospective students estimating time to degree should additionally consult our Group Code Registration Policy for information regarding registration for HCDE 300- and 400-level coursework.
Can I pursue another major or minor in addition to HCDE?
In some cases, yes. Any second major that is declared along with HCDE automatically becomes a double degree (as opposed to a double major), requiring a minimum of 225 credits to graduate. You will need to map out a plan for completing all requirements for both degrees in MyPlan and meet with advisers for both majors to discuss your reasons for pursuing a second degree, review your plan, and confirm whether it may be possible to complete both majors within UW's Satisfactory Progress guidelines. We do not allow double degrees with any Engineering degree, Informatics, or Interaction Design.
Typically, minors are more straightforward to fit in than a second degree. Students who wish to declare a minor should take a first pass at mapping our their remaining major and minor requirements in MyPlan and schedule an HCDE Advising appointment to discuss their plan and confirm that it’s feasible to fit in the minor within UW's Satisfactory Progress guidelines.
When are information sessions?
Information sessions and application workshop dates can be found on the HCDE Info Session Calendar.
Do you accept Post-bac students?
No. Students who have already completed a Bachelor's degree are encouraged to look into HCDE's Graduate Certificate in User Centered Design or Master’s Degree programs. Students admitted into these programs come from interdisciplinary academic backgrounds.
Are HCDE courses available online or through distance learning?
With the exception of the remote courses during the COVID-19 pandemic, the program is only offered in-person on the UW Seattle campus.
Where could I learn more about the undergraduate program in Human Centered Design & Engineering?
Please see the Bachelor of Science Program Overview.
FAQs for Transfers and Interest Changers
Where can I find the application?
The online HCDE Undergraduate Application is available on the College of Engineering website. Transfer students and interest changers preparing to apply to HCDE can preview the application components that they will be required to submit and the personal statement prompt by following the “Get Ready to Apply” link on that page.
When does the application open?
The application opens approximately two weeks prior to the application deadline.
When will I be notified regarding an admission decision?
All applicants will be notified of being admitted or declined approximately one month after the deadline. Additional information regarding next steps after your admission decision will be outlined in your decision letter. For admitted students, this will include directions for how to accept or decline the offer, important information about HCDE policies and registration, and details regarding the HCDE Orientation.
Can I transfer to UW prior to applying to the HCDE major?
In most cases, it is best to apply to transfer to UW and to apply to the HCDE major for the same quarter. Factors included in the UW Admissions holistic review process include well-defined academic goals, preparation for intended major, and a plan for timely completion of a bachelor’s degree. UW’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy also states that students must declare a major by the time they have completed 5 quarters and 105 credits and must graduate by the time they reach 12 quarters and 210 credits. Transfer students who have already completed 6 or more quarters and 90 or more credits at another institution and who are not on track to declare a major when they arrive at UW often run into issues with satisfactory progress, which can have implications for registration and admission to majors, including HCDE. Students who have questions about this are encouraged to Schedule a "BS Prospectives" advising appointment with our peer advisers.
How long should my personal statement be?
Your personal statement should address all of the statement prompts in roughly 750 words. Please be mindful of keeping your statement around 750 words out of respect for our admission committee’s time.
Can HCDE advising help with my personal statement?
The HCDE staff advisor is not able to give feedback on personal statements. The HCDE peer advisors can give feedback on personal statements, but only during appointments (not via email). To talk about your personal statement with a peer advisor, book a “BS Prospectives” advising appointment. You are also encouraged to use UW campus resources such as the writing centers or the Career & Internship Center.
Do you have any other advice for the personal statement?
In addition to getting as much feedback as possible on your personal statement, we encourage prospective students to remember the following:
- Be sure that you are addressing all aspects of the prompt in your personal statement
- Provide specific examples that show rather than tell the admissions committee how you have explored HCDE and why you believe HCDE will be the best fit for your interests and goals
- While geared towards students applying to graduate school, this article from the Seattle Times also has great advice on writing personal statements
Is the personal statement rubric used by the HCDE BS Admissions Committee available online?
Students who are curious about the personal statement rubric used by the HCDE BS Admissions Committee can find a sample of that rubric here. However, prospective students reviewing the rubric far in advance should note that the committee may periodically make updates to the personal statement prompts and rubric. The HCDE Department also cannot conduct pre-evaluations of admission applications. We recommend that prospective students attend an HCDE BS info session or schedule a “BS Prospectives” advising appointment for advice regarding personal statements.
Can I submit a letter of recommendation?
No, HCDE does not accept letters of recommendation.
Can I submit a portfolio or sample work?
No, HCDE does not accept portfolios or sample work. Because the admissions committee has to review so many applicants each cycle, they do not have time to review portfolios. However, you may choose to describe your portfolio projects in your personal statement.
What if I don’t have all the prerequisites completed by the application deadline?
All prerequisites must be completed by the application deadline to be eligible for admission. However, there are two situations in which an applicant who is in their second/sophomore year of college or later may petition to be reviewed for conditional admission with no more than one admission prerequisite still in progress in Spring (not in a future term):
- If the applicant is applying to transfer directly to UW from a semester school
- If the applicant has experienced extraordinary hardship which has impacted their ability to complete this final prerequisite before the application deadline
To petition to be reviewed for conditional admission in one of the situations described above, applicants must submit the HCDE BS Conditional Admission Petition. This petition is open from the first day of Winter quarter (see the UW Academic Calendar) through the annual HCDE BS application deadline (5PM Pacific Time on 04/05) for students who will be applying to enter the major the following Autumn. We recommend that you submit this petition at least one week before the HCDE BS application deadline. All applicants must also submit a complete application to the HCDE major by the annual application deadline.
For the petition, applicants will need to confirm their current year in college, indicate which prerequisite they still have in progress, and upload an unofficial transcript or registration screenshot showing that they are currently registered for their final admission prerequisite in Spring. Students petitioning on the basis of extraordinary hardship will also be asked to briefly describe the hardship that impacted their ability to complete this admission prerequisite. Documentation of the extraordinary hardship is not required.
Please bear in mind that submission of a petition does not guarantee that the petition will be approved. If the petition is approved, applying with one prerequisite still in progress may be a disadvantage for admission consideration. If admitted, applicants offered conditional admission would need to successfully complete the final admission prerequisite in Spring and meet the required minimum grades for admission to retain their spot in the HCDE BS Program. Conditional admits who do not satisfy the admission prerequisites by the end of Spring quarter will lose their spot in the HCDE BS Program.
Applications with one prerequisite still in progress in Spring will only be reviewed under the conditions described above. Applications from students who have not yet completed or met the minimum grades in more than one prerequisite or who do not otherwise meet the conditions outlined above will not be reviewed.
Can I use Satisfactory (S) graded courses for my admission prerequisites?
Courses taken Satisfactory/Non-Satisfactory (S/NS) in which an S grade is earned may only apply to the HCDE admission prerequisites if they were taken in an Extraordinary Circumstances Quarter.
Is admission to the program competitive?
Yes, HCDE is a capacity-constrained program, meaning we are unable to admit all qualified students. Prospective students are encouraged to schedule a “BS Prospectives” appointment to discuss personal statement best practices and advice for putting together a strong application.
How can I increase my chances of being admitted?
The most important part of your application is your personal statement, as it’s how the admission committee gets to know you! The department particularly values personal statements that thoroughly address the prompt and articulate an understanding of HCDE. Involvement in student organizations, research, internships, employment, or volunteer experience may help us understand your interests and values and how you have identified that HCDE as the best fit for your goals. Completion of the admission prerequisites, competitive grades, and positive quarterly grade trends are also all key components in evaluating applications. While taking HCDE-related courses can be a great way to explore the field, since most HCDE courses are not open to non-majors, there is no expectation that students applying to the major will have already completed an HCDE course.
If I am not accepted into the program, could I receive feedback about why?
Yes, but the amount of personalized feedback we can provide may be limited. As a smaller capacity constrained program, we are unable to admit all qualified students. For feedback on your personal statement and advice for putting together a strong application, schedule a "BS Prospectives" appointment with an HCDE Peer Advisor.
Can I apply multiple times if I’m denied?
You are welcome to apply more than once. In each application cycle, you are a new applicant and must submit all new materials to be considered. Bear in mind that the UW’s Satisfactory Academic Progress policy states that students who have not declared a major by the time they reach 5 or more quarters and 105 or more credits will receive a registration hold. The more time you spend applying equates to more credits you earn without being in a major and making progress to graduate. HCDE cannot remove registration holds for students who are not yet admitted to the major.
What if I will not be eligible to apply until the end of junior year or later?
Please note that the HCDE core course curriculum takes a minimum of 2 years to complete. While you are still permitted to apply, it’s important to note that we do consider Satisfactory Academic Progress as part of our admission review.
If you will be applying to the HCDE major at the end of your junior year or later, please use the “Additional Comments” box in the application to briefly share why you are deciding to change your major, add another degree, or do not yet have another major in progress. Describe the reasons why you will need to extend your graduation timeline beyond 4 years/12 quarters and why this is the best path for meeting your individual academic and career goals.
International students and students receiving Financial Aid or other funding should also talk to the relevant UW office (e.g., International Student Services, Office of Student Financial Aid) to understand how delaying their graduation beyond 4 years may impact their visas or funding.
Will applying a second time mean I’m more likely to get into the major?
No. The admissions committee does not track whether an applicant has applied to the major before.
Admission Appeals
This procedure only applies to interest changers and transfer students. If you are an engineering undeclared student, please contact your assigned Engineering adviser.
Every complete application to the HCDE BS Program is holistically reviewed by at least 2 reviewers and discussed by the Admissions Committee. Given this thorough review process and the limited capacity in our major, our Admissions Committee will not consider admissions appeals. If you were not admitted to the HCDE major, you may be eligible to reapply in a future admission cycle.
If you believe there was an error in the data considered by the Admissions Committee which was not due to submission of incomplete or inaccurate records, you should schedule a "Current BS Student" appointment (not a prospective student appointment) with the HCDE BS staff adviser (not a peer adviser) within 3 weeks of your notification of denial.
For general feedback on your personal statement and advice for putting together a strong application, schedule a "BS Prospectives" appointment with an HCDE peer adviser.
