Dr. Kristin Dew
The department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) is pleased to announce that Dr. Kristin Dew is joining the faculty as a Lecturer, beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.
Dr. Kristin Dew is a recent graduate of HCDE’s PhD program, where her research focused on ethics and sustainability in technology production practices. In her dissertation, Exploring Sustainable Materials through Interaction Design Practice, she examined what designers’ tools and processes might look like if oriented around concerns for resource scarcity, provenance, and disposal.
Dew has served as both a lead instructor and a teaching assistant for several HCDE courses, including HCI Theory, User Research, UX Prototyping, Qualitative Research Methods, Quantitative Research Methods & Experiment Design, and UX Portfolio. In 2017-2018, Dew led a year-long Directed Research Group for HCDE students focused on sustainable interaction design and material inquiry methods. In 2019, Dew crafted new curriculum for HCDE's undergraduate theory course, Foundations of HCDE, in which students explored the lasting social, historical, cultural, and ethical impacts of modern technology design through interwoven reading, writing, and making activities.
In 2018, Dew was named a digital humanities fellow at the UW’s Simpson Center for the Humanities. She was awarded the award for Excellence in Teaching from the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering in 2019. Her work has been published in ACM CHI, DIS, CSCW, and LIMITS with multiple awards, as well as the journal Human-Computer Interaction and Journal of Biomedical Informatics.
In addition to receiving her PhD in HCDE, Dew holds a Master of Science in HCDE, and a Bachelor of Science in Journalism and International Studies from Northwestern University.
Please join us in welcoming Kristin to the HCDE faculty!
