The University of Washington's Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering welcomes Dr. Sayamindu Dasgupta to the faculty.

Sayamindu Dasgupta's research focuses on how young people can learn with and about data—especially in contexts of the communities that they live, learn, and play in. He has designed systems to enable children to design and develop their own data analysis tools, evaluated design changes in existing systems that allow more creative possibilities with data, and studied how children question and critique data and data-driven systems. Dasgupta is committed to learning experiences and communities that are welcoming to all. Toward this, he has studied learner experiences with digital tools translated into the languages they speak at home, and has analyzed differences in participation patterns across genders in interest-driven and informal online learning.

Dasgupta joins HCDE from his previous position as an assistant professor in the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Previously, he worked as a Moore-Sloan and WRF postdoctoral fellow with the UW's eScience Institute and was hosted by the UW Department of Communication. During his time at UW, Dasgupta was also affiliated with the Human-Centered Data Science Lab at HCDE.

Dasgupta holds a doctorate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he was part of the Lifelong Kindergarten research group. His research has received recognition and awards at several human-computer interaction conferences including CHI, CSCW, VL/HCC, and IDC. In 2014, Dasgupta was selected as a member of the Forbes 30 under 30 list for Education.
