Kate Starbird, an associate professor in the Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering, appeared in a segment of 60 minutes on Sunday, March 24, in a segment titled "The Right to be Wrong." The segment is about the right of free speech on social media platforms—an issue currently under discussion by the US Supreme Court.

Professor Starbird was interviewed by 60 Minutes reporter Lesley Stahl about her research on misinformation and disinformation online, as well as her efforts to alert social media platforms to misleading information on their sites.

Stabrird is a co-founder of the University of Washington's Center for an Informed Public, which formed in 2019 around a shared mission of resisting strategic misinformation, promoting an informed society, and strengthening democratic discourse.
